More Indian Students Moving Abroad for Higher Studies: Dubai Study October 10, 2018 18:15

In the following three years, India could succeed China as the fastest-growing international student target market for foreign universities, according to a Dubai study.According to a report in Khaleej Times on the market research on transnational student mobility and university trends, which was done by Dubai International Academic City (DIAC) and BMI Media, foreign universities see India growing faster than even China in sending students abroad for higher education. The study spoke to 104 universities in 41 countries, most of which were from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates. "India and China have always been the leading market for international students coming to study here (Dubai). It could be due to different reasons - the visa process, the flexibility. We have a lot of Indian families that are living here, and their students are joining these universities, besides the ones that are coming from overseas," Khaleej Times cited Mohamed Abdullah, managing director of DIAC as saying. The study had requested universities to rank their top five countries by transnational student numbers. While China appeared on top with 17 percent, India closely followed at 16.8 percent. Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan were at 5 percent, 4.9 percent, and 4.8 percent respectively.Abdullah told the publication that with the recent visa policy changes, UAE will turn even more attractive for international students.According to the publication, the UAE had recently announced that students that perform "exceptionally well" in UAE universities will be entitled to a 10-year residency visa whereas other students can obtain a five-year visa. The UAE government as well said that students who have a dependent visa will be eligible for an extension, so they can find employment opportunities in the Emirates once they graduate."The universities can benefit from these kinds of policies the government is implementing," Abdullah told the publication.About 14 percent of the universities that were surveyed reported a decline in international student numbers. Of this, 60 percent were American universities which said that due to current government policy, foreign students are no longer preferring American universities. However, the report said that international students still prefer studying in American universities. On the other hand, Canadian universities have seen a resurgence in international students. Universities in the North American country have seen over 11 percent growth. According to the report, the quality of education, and positive government policies have made Canada the fastest-growing major market for higher education.-Sowmya Sangam

Donald Trump Says his Daughter Ivanka Would be Dynamite at UN October 10, 2018 16:09

The United States President Donald Trump on Thursday said he is sure that his daughter Ivanka Trump would be "dynamite" as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, but admitted that he would be "accused of nepotism" if he has chosen her to succeed an Indian-American Nikki Haley. Haley, 46, announced Tuesday she would resign from her post as the U.S. ambassador to the UN effective at the end of 2018.As President Trump piled praise on Haley's performance during her term of office as the representative to the world body, he said many people would like to replace her.Trump said that he expects to name a replacement for Haley in the next "two to three weeks," and said that he would be talking about candidates with the former South Carolina governor and others.Trump told reporters at the White House that his daughter Ivanka would make an "incredible" ambassador to the UN."The people that know - it's nothing to do with nepotism. But I want to tell you: The people that know, know that Ivanka would be dynamite. But, you know, I'd then be accused of nepotism, if you can believe it," he said."I think Ivanka would be incredible. That doesn't mean I'd pick her, because you'd be accused of nepotism, even though I'm not sure there's anybody more competent in the world. But that's okay," Trump said in response to a question.Shortly after the President's remarks, Ivanka Trump took to Twitter to rule herself out of the running for an ambassadorship."It is an honor to serve in the White House alongside so many great colleagues and I know that the President will nominate a formidable replacement for Ambassador Haley. That replacement will not be me."Guesses that Ivanka would take over the position mounted after Haley praised her and her husband, Jared Kushner, in discussing her resignation in the Oval Office.-Sowmya Sangam

Taylor Swift Drives Voter Registrations after Turning Political October 10, 2018 16:01

Pop superstar Taylor Swift's decision to walk into electoral politics for the first time has driven a rise in online voter registration, especially among young people, according to the website Vote.org.The nonprofit site, which assists people to register online, reported over 250,000 new registrations since Swift posted a message on photo-sharing application Instagram on Sunday backing two Democratic candidates in her home state of Tennessee and urging people to register.By comparison, the site recorded 57,000 new registrations in all of August and 190,000 earlier this month.More than 60 percent of the registrations since Sunday were among voters between 18 and 29 years old, an increase the site said was likely prompted by Swift's post."This is a pretty incredible, off-the-charts event," said Raven Brooks, the chief operating officer for Vote.org.Vote.org acknowledged it was not possible to measure the direct impact of Swift's move, but Brooks noted the rush in young voters was in line with Swift's youthful fan base.Swift's tremendous reach - a best-selling album and tour as well as 112 million Instagram followers - underscores the way famous personalities can leverage their online presence.Swift on Tuesday, without declaring any party interest won four awards, including artist of the year, at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles and again urged fans to vote. Rihanna, a Grammy winner in an Instagram post urged fans to register to vote on Tuesday – the concluding day in 14 states for citizens to do so. Tight Tennessee Race Polls show the United States Senate contest between Democrat Phil Bredesen and Republican Marsha Blackburn, a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, virtually tied in a state Trump won by 16 points in 2016.Swift, who has shunned politics, told her followers she could not support Blackburn due to the congresswoman's record on women's issues and gay rights.President Donald Trump on Monday called Swift an uninformed voter. "Let's just say I like Taylor's music about 25 percent less now, OK?" he told reporters.Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee also chimed in saying her endorsements "won't impact the election unless we allow 13 yr old girls to vote." Galore celebrities identify as liberals, and Democrat Hillary Clinton enjoyed broad support from actors, musicians and other popular figures in 2016.-Sowmya Sangam

Trump Apologizes to Kavanaugh for 'Pain' Caused During Confirmation October 10, 2018 10:52

The United States President Donald Trump on Monday apologized to recently confirmed Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh for the trauma that Kavanaugh and his menage had to undergo throughout the confirmation procedure, at the ceremonial swearing-in event in the White House. Referring to the sexual harassment allegations by American professor of Psychology at Palo Alto University Christine Blasey Ford which led to the hearing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Trump apologized for the "terrible pain and suffering" that Kavanaugh and his family were subjected to.CNN quoted Trump as saying, "Those who step forward to serve our country deserve a fair and dignified evaluation, not a campaign of political and personal destruction based on lies and deception. What happened to the Kavanaugh family violates every notion of fairness, decency and due process." Trump further asserted that a man or a woman in this country "must always be presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty"."You, sir, under historic scrutiny, were proven innocent," Trump reiterated.Judge Brett Kavanaugh was sworn-in as an associate justice in the Supreme Court of the United States on Saturday, soon after the Senate confirmed his nomination. The Supreme Court had, in the beginning, confirmed that Kavanaugh would be sworn-in on the same day as the final vote on his nomination. The concluding vote count was registered at 50-48 for Kavanaugh, coming as a major triumph for President Donald Trump a month ahead of the mid-term elections.Ford had alleged Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting at her party in earlier in 1982, when the two were in senior high school, whereas another accuser - Deborah Ramirez - had stated that he uncovered himself to her while in their freshman year at Yale University. Kavanaugh has well-kept his stand of denying all the misconducts ever since the allegations came to the fore.-Sowmya Sangam

Indian-American Nikki Haley Quits as U.S. Ambassador to United Nations October 10, 2018 09:46

An Indian-American Nikki Haley has resigned as the United States ambassador to the United Nations on Tuesday, according to several reports in the U.S. media. A senior State Department official said Haley told her staff this morning. The 45-year-old Haley is the first ever Indian-American appointed to a Cabinet-level position by any president. The stepping down of Haley has left White House with one less moderate Republican voice on Trump cabinet's foreign policy team.Haley, a former governor of South Carolina, had been an early and recurrent critic of Trump, attracting frequent admiration. Haley was born in South Carolina to an Indian-American Sikh family. She earned international attention for speaking out against the Confederate battle flag in the aftermath of the 2015 massacre at a black church in Charleston.According to Michael Wolff's book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, Haley is harboring presidential drives and many in president Donald Trump's inner circle fear that she could be the heir to the presidency. Wolff, in his book, claims Haley has an eye on the presidency and Trump is seen to be grooming her for a national political future.Haley - "as ambitious as Lucifer", in the characterization of one member of the senior staff - had concluded that Trump's tenure would last, at best, a single term and that she, with requisite submission, could be his heir apparent, Wolff writes."I said 'I am a policy girl, I want to be part of the decision-making process,'" she told CNN in a 2017 interview, recalling the conversation with Trump. "He said, 'done.' And I said, 'I don't want to be a wallflower or a talking head. I want to be able to speak my mind.' He said, 'That is why I asked you to do this.' In all honesty, I didn't think they were going to take me up on everything I asked for. And they gave me all that. So how do you turn that down?"Throughout her over a year-and-a-half on the job, she has recurrently spoken her mind, whether it's going further on human rights than numerous of her administration colleagues or censuring racism at home.-Sowmya Sangam

180 Million Jobs for Women at Risk of Being Displaced Globally: IMF October 09, 2018 16:00

Due to new technologies like automation, as many as 180 million jobs for women are at high risk of being displaced worldwide, the International Monetary Fund warned Tuesday. The global financial institution urged the world leadership to indue women with needed skills, close gender gap in leadership positions, bridge the digital divide and ease transition for workers. In a note released during the annual IMF and the World Bank meetings in Bali, the world body said that the figures of massive potential job loss for women are based on its estimate of 30 countries, which includes 28 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries and Cyprus and Singapore. It as well rued that the new technologies could further drive down demand and cut down relative wages for the routine tasks that women perform, lowering returns from labor market participation. The IMF said its results indicate that, given the current state of technology, 10 percent of the male and female workforce (54 million workers) in 30 countries (28 OECD member countries, Cyprus, and Singapore) is at a high risk (facing higher than 70 percent likelihood of being automated) of being displaced by technology within the next two decades.A larger proportion of the female workforce is at high risk for automation than the male workforce (11 percent versus 9 percent), with 26 million female jobs possibly at stake in these countries. Less enlightened and aged female workers (40 and older), and those in clerical, service and sales positions are disproportionately open to automation."Extrapolating our results, we find that 180 million female jobs are at high risk of being displaced by automation globally," the IMF said.In its discussion note, the IMF ruled that women are under-represented in sectors anticipating jobs growth, where technological changes can be complementary to human skills. As such it called for endowing women with the requisite skills, bridging the digital divide, closing the gender gap in leadership positions, and easing the transition for workers.Women, it said, appear less endowed with some of the skills needed to thrive in the digital era: they are currently under-represented in sectors anticipating jobs growth, such as Communications Technology and engineering and Information. Simultaneously, there are some bright spots, it noted.Jobs are likely to grow in traditionally female-dominated sectors such as health, social services, education, and jobs involving cognitive and interpersonal skills and thus less prone to automation. However, across sectors and occupations, under-representation of women in professional and managerial positions leaves them at greater risk for displacement, the IMF said.Observing that the depth and speed of future technological advancement and technology diffusion across countries as well as their impact on jobs are largely unknown, the note said that as such, its estimates and extrapolation should be interpreted with caution."Second, jobs at risk of automation is not the same thing as actual job loss. Our estimates of potential impacts of automation consider only technical feasibility given the current state of technology. Job losses could potentially be offset by new work opportunities created by technology and higher output potential owing to falling costs and prices," it said.According to the IMF, the Routine Task Intensity index, on average, is 13 percent higher for female workers across its sample of 30 countries: an outcome that is statistically important.Female workers execute fewer tasks requiring analytical and interpersonal skills or physical labor, and more tasks that are regular, characterized by lack of job adaptability, little learning on the job, and considerable repetitiveness. "This implies that women are more exposed to automation than men," the IMF added.-Sowmya Sangam

Alphabet Shuts Down Google+ After 5 Lakh User's Data Breached October 09, 2018 15:42

Internet giant Google on Monday said it is shutting down the consumer version of its own social networking platform Google+ due to reduced usage and a defect discovered in March earlier this year that could leak the data of about half a million of its users."The consumer version of Google+ currently has low usage and engagement: 90 percent of Google+ user sessions are less than five seconds," said Google, which is headquartered in Mountain View in northern California, Xinhua reported.Google on Monday said it is going to shut down Google+ in the coming months seven years after it was launched as a social networking site of its own name brand. The end of Google+ as well came as a consequence of a bug discovered last year but acknowledged for the first time by Google on Monday, and the defect in one of its Google+ "People APIs" (Application Programming Interface) exposed some private user data to third-party developers, comprising such information as the genders, occupations, email addresses, ages and of many users."We discovered and immediately patched this bug in March 2018," Google said, but the flaw, which has existed since 2015, could potentially affect up to 500,000 Google+ accounts."Our analysis showed that up to 438 applications may have used this API," Google said. However, "We found no evidence that any developer was aware of this bug or abusing the API, and we found no evidence that any Profile data was misused."The Google+ vulnerability was discovered at a time that almost coincided with the notorious privacy leak scandal of the social media giant network Facebook, which has been widely criticized for its nonaccomplishment to protect its users' private data.Social media giant Facebook has been under heavy investigation over its privacy policy after a British data mining company Cambridge Analytica was accused of illicitly accessing the data of 87 million Facebook users without their knowledge.Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg was summoned to a hearing in the United States Congress in April this year to explain the firm's security measures and how it handled users' privacy.-Sowmya Sangam
