Indian Shrimp Faces Threat of Ban in U.S. November 10, 2018 15:35

The Indian shrimp is facing a ban threat in the United States, as the Department of State has found that the fishing patterns followed by the country do not obey with the U.S. regulations to save sea turtles. The ban, if imposed, may adversely affect the Rs. 7,000-crore export of shrimp from Kerala. The Department of State on May 1, 2017, had certified 39 nations and one economy, and acknowledged determinations for seven fisheries, as having satisfactory measures in place to protect sea turtles during the course of commercial shrimp fishing, which permits those countries to export wild-caught shrimp to the country. However, India does not feature in the list of certified countries. Since India pleaded that the country is observing safe fishing patterns, a team of experts from the U.S. had visited Odisha, where olive ridley sea turtles nest in large numbers. The team is expected to visit Kerala by January 2019, said sources. The U.S. has implemented a stringent anti-dumping policy to ensure the protection of endangered marine species. As per the norms, the exporter has to furnish details regarding the location from where the fish was caught and the fishing gear used.   If the catch is from outside the territorial waters using illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing practices, the consignment will be rejected. The U.S. law demands the use of Turtle Excluder Devices (TED) in fishing gear to ensure that no turtle is harmed due to the fishing practice."There is a threat of a ban in the U.S. on the import of wild shrimp from India. We are trying to convince them that we don't follow destructive fishing practices," said CMFRI principal scientist Sunil Mohamed."We have informed the American authorities that we follow safe fishing practices and ensure the protection of the marine ecosystem. Turtles are found mostly in the Bay of Bengal and there is no nesting found on the Western Coast. Besides, a majority of the shrimp exported from Kerala is from the shrimp farms. We expect they will give some relaxation," said Fisheries Deputy Director S Mahesh.All-Kerala Fishing Boat Operators Association general secretary Joseph Xavier Kalapurakal said Kerala boats have not installed TED as the population of sea turtles is low in the Arabian sea. "We don't follow destructive fishing practices. Even if a turtle is found in the catch, we release it into the sea. We are confident of convincing the American authorities," he said. With the Fisheries Ministers from southern states set to meet in Kochi on Saturday, fishermen leaders have demanded the issue should be discussed. "The American authorities are bringing in regulations to support their fishing sector. The India Government should take up the matter with the American authorities and find an amicable solution to the problem. If the ban is imposed it will push the fishermen to penury," said Matsya Thozhilali Aikya Vedi president Charles George."A major chunk of the export to the U.S. constitutes farmed shrimp and we don't think the ban will have a huge impact. We export wild shrimp worth 253 million dollars to the U.S." said an officer.-Sowmya Sangam

Sooraj Pancholi Ends Silence on Jiah Khan's Suicide Case November 10, 2018 13:27

Bollywood actor Sooraj Pancholi has spilled beans on the suicide case of his ex-girlfriend and actor Jiah Khan. He shared a long post on Instagram on his 28th birthday on Friday in which he addressed the six years-long court case against him. He shared a picture of a hand holding two candles and told his side of the story in the caption. Sooraj said he waited all this while to comment on the abetment to suicide charge against him as he wanted to wait until the case ended. However, since the case took far longer than expected, he decided to share his thoughts about it on social media.       View this post on Instagram Today I complete 28 years of my life. I want to take up this moment to share a few thoughts that have been in my heart for a while. I wanted to wait to speak out until the case ended, but it’s taken longer than expected. I don’t know where to start from. It is difficult to express some feelings when so many people, so many emotions are involved. First, I want to thank those who have stood by me like a pillar of strength. It has been a long journey that started when I was still trying to understand life. I have been fighting the case in court for the last 6 years, with patience and respect, waiting for the trial to be completed. In this process I have been called a murderer, a criminal, an abuser and so much worse. I read these things about me almost every single day. And my heartfelt effort has always been to be strong, respectful and ignore it. But they still fill my and my loved ones’ heart with so much sadness. I don’t blame the people who call me names, because that’s how i have been portrayed in public, but i’m not the monster that has been portrayed in headlines. I know how easy it is to think the worst of someone and accuse them but it is exceptionally hard to prove myself innocent as there’s a procedure that we need to follow. A procedure that has taken long enough that i have been made to feel guilty without even being given a fair chance to prove my innocence. There have been accusations and assumptions but there has been no validation. But, this is not about what others say. This is about how I feel. For as long as I can remember, my dream has always been to make my parents proud. I have always tried to be a good son to them. In the last 6 years, I’ve tried harder everyday to achieve this dream and to be positive. So today, I am praying with my heart that our family can move forward, that the trial can come to a fair end and that I can give back all the love, support and strength I have received from so many of you. Thank you to all of you who constantly send positivity my way. You may not know it, but every single one of your prayers has helped. Over 2 Lakh Indian Children Killed Due to Pneumonia, Diarrhoea in 2016 November 10, 2018 13:15

A new report released Friday said India's vaccination coverage to prevent rotavirus infection, a chief origin of serious diarrhoea in young children, was the lowest among the 15 countries which introduced earlier this year. It also pointed out that India lost more than 2.6 lakh children under five years from pneumonia and diarrhea in 2016.The report found health systems falling "woefully short" in guaranteeing that the most endangered children have access to prevention and treatment services in the 15 countries, including India, that account for 70 percent of worldwide pneumonia and diarrhea deaths in children under five.Despite significant cut downs in disease in recent years because of improvements in access and use of health interventions, about half a million diarrhea and pneumonia deaths still occurred in two countries - India and Nigeria, it said. The report said: The number of deaths of children under five years due to pneumonia in 2016 was 1,58,176, while diarrhea deaths were 1,02,813. Unveiled ahead of the 10th annual World Pneumonia Day on November 12, the 2018 Pneumonia and Diarrhea Progress Report by the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health describes development in fighting these two diseases in 15 countries.According to the report, the 15 nations in order with the highest number of pneumonia and diarrhea child deaths are India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Chad, Angola, Somalia, Indonesia, Tanzania, China, Niger, Bangladesh, Uganda, and Cote d'Ivoire.Elaborating about RotaC coverage, it said as of 2017, rotavirus vaccine had not been introduced in eight of the 15 focus countries Nigeria, DRC, Chad, Somalia, Indonesia, China, Bangladesh, and Uganda.Of the seven countries where rotavirus vaccine has been presented, the average coverage of absolute rotavirus vaccine is 58 percent."Among countries that had introduced the vaccine as of 2017, the lowest coverage levels were in Pakistan (12 percent) and India (13 percent), both of which had recently started phased national rollouts that had not yet reached all states or provinces," the report said.Elaborating about the progress in India, home to more under-five pneumonia and diarrhea deaths than any other country in 2016, has been "mixed", it said.Rising coverage of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccines also continued scale-up of rotavirus vaccines, initially introduced in mid-2016, led to a bump in scoring for these interventions since earlier this year's report."Introduced in 2017, the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) has been included in only six states to-date. Further scale-up of the vaccine to all states should be considered," the report, which analyzed government data, said.It said India's scores for exclusive breastfeeding declined as did coverage of ORS. "The proportion of children receiving important treatments remains dismally low, with barely 20 percent receiving ORS for diarrhoeal disease," it said.-Sowmya Sangam

6 Crafty Signs He's Faking His Love for you November 10, 2018 10:34

It is very hard to differentiate a fake relationship from a genuine one. Many of us live under the impression of an enduring relationship when what we are in fact having is a simple affair. It is factual that real, healthy relationships take a lot of sweat to uphold nonetheless they are absolutely better than fake ones. There are plentiful things that need to be well-thought-out when in a 'real relationship' since there are a lot of people who could dupe us into trusting that they are really committed to us but what they in fact pursue might be just lovemaking or to purely hang around. We must learn to distinguish between people who truly be in earnest when they say that they love us and those who do not.The following are the things that you need to keep a lookout to realize if your partner is tricking you: Extreme PDA Seemingly, it might appear that a couple who are very loving towards each other in a social context might share a very affectionate relationship privately, however, this might not at all times be the situation.                        Image credit: Reader's Digest While PDA (Public Display of Attention) to a convinced extent is good, an extreme display of love can indicate a compensatory behavior. It is a method of preserving the impression of a loving relationship in front of others and themselves too. This is not a very infrequent incidence. Countless couples who do not share a very good bond every so often feel the necessity to cover it up with their display of affection. Appearances can be rather deceptive. Therefore, the next time you see a happy couple holding hands, it might not necessarily mean that they are in love. No Special Moments Being in a relationship with a person you genuinely love gives you a different feeling all in all.                        Image source: CelebrationJoy If you do not find anything extraordinary in your relationship, then you better not be in a relationship whatsoever. It does not mean that it needs to be rather celebration or outstanding but then you must at least find pleasure in the small things like a reminiscence of you together which makes you glad, or calling out names to each other. It is not love when your relationship look as if to be 'normal' continually. There must be to some degree from which you could derive enthusiasm. No Serious Discussions Communication is a central part of a relationship. You and your lover should feel unrestricted to open up in front of each other and should be able to converse matters of the heart. Communication does not mean simply speaking about the climate and added insignificant things, you should be able to talk about thoughtful and significant matters too. Couples who are truly in love with one another talk about future plans, having children, wandering places etc…                        Image source: Victoria Buzz It should also be kept in consciousness that arguments and fights are also parts of a truthful relationship. While discussing serious things, arguments are guaranteed to occur and also remember that they will be fixed at the dusk. But if you do not discuss no matter what with your partner that matters to you then you should perhaps re-evaluate your relationship. Power Game When your relationship turns out to be all about winning an argument then you might not be in a 'true relationship' finally. In a situation where your lone concern is to prove your opinion accurate, you place your ego over the feelings of your partner.                        Image source: Relationship Junkie Although arguments are very much parts of every relationship, occasionally one of the partners has to step down to end the fiend even if the other is wrong. Because being in a relationship is not consistent about being correct, rather it is about giving space, understanding, and care. As an alternative, the necessary time should be given to the partner so that one realizes about one's flaws in the future. Ignorant about each other If you share an honest bond with your partner, you would be intense to know about your partner's family and friends.                        Image source: FemaleAdda If you want a future together that you would be attentive in knowing your partner's close ones. It is solely when the relationship does not matter to you and you know that it would perhaps not last long enough, that you do not show much attention in learning about your partner's companions. It is relevant in the case of your partner as well. It can only mean that he does not want to get too involved with you if he does not acquaint you with his parents or friends. Lovemaking If You have pleasing sex then there is nothing else that gives you abundant enthusiasm from the relationship.                        Image source: Cosmopolital Being physical is the only way you people can sustain your bonding. If you can find no real trust, passion, care etc… in the relationship then it is very probable that you are not really attached to one another. Many people currently get into relationships only to go into bed. At first, he might flirt with you, make you feel like you are the center of his universe but actually, all they want is to get you in bed. But clearly, all guys are not like that and there are ones who are really straight and honest.-Sowmya Sangam

Google Announces New Sexual Misconduct Policies After Global Strike November 09, 2018 18:26

Google has apologized for the tackling of sexual harassment cases in the past while vowing to bring changes to make the company a safer workplace. The acknowledgment has come after a worldwide strike by more than 20,000 employees earlier this week.   "We recognize that we have not always gotten everything right in the past and we are sincerely sorry for that," Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai wrote in a note to employees on Thursday. The Google employees walkout was an objection against sexual harassment at the company and its unseemly handling of sexual misbehavior allegations against top executives. "Over the past few weeks, Google's leaders and I have heard your feedback and have been moved by the stories you've shared…It's clear we need to make some changes," Pichai said. Promising more transparency on how it handles harassment allegations, Pichai said Google will double down on its commitment to be a "representative, equitable, and respectful workplace". New Policies Among the key changes proclaimed by the Google, CEO includes making mediation optional for individual sexual harassment and sexual assault claims. Google is overhauling its reporting channels by bringing them together on one dedicated site and including live support, he informed. "We will enhance the processes we use to handle concerns, including the ability for Googlers to be accompanied by a support person," Pichai said. Google will offer its employees extra care and resources during and after the process, he said. "This includes extended counseling and career support," Pichai said, adding that the company would also update and expand the mandatory sexual harassment training. The new policy changes announced by the search engine giant have virtually met most of the demands by Google protesters, except the one that demanded a place for an employee representative on the company's board. Organizers of last week's massive protests called for more transparency in handling sexual harassment, inequality overpay, employee empowerment, and work opportunities. By Sowmya

U.S. Says Will Take Public Opinion On H-4 Visa Revocation Proposal November 09, 2018 18:05

The Trump administration has made it certain to lawmakers and the American corporate sector that the people would get a chance to respond to its proposal of revoking work authorization to H-4 spouse visas after they raised their concerns over the decision, which will affect scores of Indians. The H-4 visa, issued to the spouses of H-1B foreign workers is a non-immigrant visa through which many Indians workers are employed in the United States firms. It lets the U.S. companies hire foreign workers in specialty occupations that need technical or theoretical skillfulness. It is the most sought-after visa among Indian IT (Information Technology) professionals. H-4 visas are issued solely to very close or immediate family members of the H-1B visa holders. It includes the employee's married person and children less than 21 years of age. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had said that the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will appear with a new proposal by January 2019 under which it is mulling to remove from its regulations certain H-4 spouses of H-1B non-immigrants as a class of foreign nations eligible for employment authorization. The new rules could impact up to 70,000 H-4 Visa holders who have work permits. The USCIS has recently written a near identical letter to top U.S. lawmakers and leaders of the corporate sector who had raised concern over the Trump administration's proposal to revoke the H-4 visas. "The public will be given an opportunity to provide feedback during a notice and comment period on any proposed revisions to regulations providing employment authorization to certain H-4 non-immigrants," L Francis Cissna, USCIS director, wrote to senators Kamala Harris and Kirsten Gillibrand in a letter dated October 16, which was posted on the organization's website this month. The two lawmakers had urged not to renege work authorization to H-4 visas. However, the letter makes no commitment on the fate of the decision to revoke the work authorization to H-4 visas, except for saying that the DHS is committed to safeguarding the integrity of the immigration system and protecting the wages and job opportunities for U.S. workers. In a letter dated September 26 and addressed to Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielson, Harris and Gillibrand had said the administration's proposal to revoke the employment authorization of certain H-4 dependent spouses of non-immigrant H-1B workers would permanently force about 1,00,000 predominantly high-skilled women to leave their professional careers. "This will harm the wellbeing of these women and their families and have negative consequences for American communities where they live and work," they had said. In another letter dated July 23 and addressed to the DHS, as many as 34 U.S. legislators had expressed concern that revoking work authorization to H-4 visas would "create significant uncertainty and financial hardship for many highly skilled professionals who are vital to U.S. economy". A group of top corporate leaders had expressed similar concerns to the DHS in a letter dated August 22. The H-4 spouses are "often highly skilled" and have built careers and lives around their ability to "contribute to companies here", they said. "Other countries allow these valuable professionals to work, so revoking their U.S. work authorization will likely cause high-skilled immigrants to take their skills to competitors outside the U.S.," stated the letter, which among others was signed by Chuck Robbins, Chief Executive Officer of Cisco Systems; Roger K Newport from AK Steel Corporation; Doug Parker of American Airlines and Stephen Squeri of American Express. The USCIS director also sent them similar responses as given to the lawmakers. By Sowmya
